A board of directors is the part of a governance structure that provides strategic leadership to an organization. There is a symbiotic relationship between operations, the part of the organization that does the work, and the strategic guidance that decides how those operations happen.
Cooperatives are people-centered enterprises owned, controlled, and run by and for their members to realize their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations.
How these needs and aspirations are met is governance. We aspire to a democratically run cooperative. Achieving that democracy requires alignment bewteen skills, policies, practices, and building mutual trust.
We hope to help the council close some longstanding gaps in alignment between operational effectiveness and strategic intent. Working together, with transparency, honesty, and inclusion, we can establish more clarity around how Hunger Mountain Coop is achieving its mission, vision, and goals.
By definition, a cooperative can't be run by one person alone. Nor can it be run by four people in an executive committee. We believe the coop now has an excellent opportunity to transform itself into a beacon of cooperative, democratic, community leadership, setting an example for all businesses in our county and region for how well a group of almost 200 cooperators can begin to practice excellent skills of inclusion, mutual support and trust, cooperative problem-solving at all levels, and above all, leadership built on listening with humility and goodwill.
Would you like to be part of building this reality?
If you have a passion for changing your community for the better, this is an excellent opportunity to do so. Hunger Mountain is a 50-year-old cooperative, and is the second largest employer in Washington County. Let's help it evolve into the best anchor institution it can be!
